Choose Your Back Boot Camp
Structured, progressive spinal rehabilitation tailored to your body, symptoms and goals.
Choose from intensive studio-based rehabilitation, a more gradual weekly programme, or personalised home and online options.
Your Starting Point: Physiotherapy Assessment
Before joining one of our studio-based Back Boot Camps, we establish what is causing your pain, why your body is being overloaded and what needs to change.
We review your symptoms, medical history, scans or investigations and previous treatment, followed by a detailed physical assessment.
Depending on your presentation, we assess:
-
posture and biomechanics
-
spinal and joint movement
-
muscle activation, strength and flexibility
-
core, gluteal and upper-back support
-
movement and compensation patterns
-
nerve mobility
-
breathing and movement control
-
pain sensitivity
-
We also establish your goals and starting measures, allowing us to track your progress.
You will leave with:
✓ A clear explanation of your presentation and why you have pain
✓ Your individual weak links and rehabilitation priorities
✓ Your starting measures
✓ A recommendation for your next step

How the 3-Week Boot Camp Works
Our Signature and Extended programmes follow a progressive three-stage system.
Your rehabilitation progresses according to how your body responds — giving you the right exercises, at the right stage, taught in the right way for your body.
Week 1 — Release + Activate
We begin by addressing restriction and teaching you to identify and activate the muscles your spine needs without compensation.
This may include:
-
activation and alignment exercises
-
functional massage and release
-
active stretching
-
kinesiology taping
-
EMS muscle stimulation
-
breathing and movement-control work
-
your first home programme
Physiotherapy treatment, including manual therapy, laser or acupuncture, can be added if clinically required.
Week 2 — Strength + Control
Once the correct muscles are activating, we progressively increase the challenge.
We develop:
-
strength
-
neuromuscular control
-
alignment and body awareness
-
sitting and standing posture
-
walking and everyday movement
-
your home exercise programme
Exercises progress from isolated muscle work towards more integrated, multi-joint movement.
Week 3 — Strength + Real-Life Function
We then integrate your improved strength and control into everyday life.
This may include:
-
advanced strengthening
-
endurance
-
multi-directional and loaded movement
-
bending and lifting
-
functional tasks
-
exercise and sport
-
independent self-management
Your Final Re-Test Session
Your final physiotherapy re-test allows us to compare your results with your starting measures.
What Are We Working Towards?
Your goals are established during your assessment and your rehabilitation is built around your individual starting measures.
We aim for:
✓ Reduced pain and stiffness
✓ Improved core, gluteal and upper-back strength
✓ Improved flexibility
✓ Better posture and alignment
✓ Improved movement control and biomechanics
✓ Greater stamina and tolerance to activity
✓ Greater confidence in movement
✓ Awareness of your individual compensation patterns
✓ The knowledge and exercises to manage your spine independently
Most importantly, you should leave understanding your own body — where you need strength, where you need flexibility, what tends to overload your spine and how to maintain your improvements.
Re-Test + Maintenance
For our studio programmes, we compare your final measures with your starting assessment and establish how best to maintain and continue your progress.
Your ongoing plan may include:
-
your personalised home programme
-
Back Lab group strengthening classes
-
online strength, stretching and posture sessions
-
Pilates
-
gym or personal training
-
return to your usual exercise or sport

Assessment
Why this assessment exists
The Back Pain Strategy Assessment
Most people with persistent back pain are told what they have — a disc issue, degeneration, sciatica, instability, tightness — but very few people are ever shown why their body reached that point in the first place.
That is exactly why this assessment exists.
Because before any rehabilitation programme can truly work, you need clarity. You need to understand:
-
what is overloading your spine
-
which parts of the body are failing, compensating or not supporting you properly
-
why recovery keeps stalling
-
and why the pain keeps returning
For many people, these underlying issues have been present for years — sometimes decades. They may be lifestyle-driven, movement-related, historic injuries, long-standing compensation patterns, or even genetic tendencies within the way the body is built and controlled.
Most standard treatment never looks at this level of detail.
Instead, people are often given generic exercises, short appointments or temporary symptom relief — without ever uncovering the deeper reasons, the spine is being repeatedly stressed.
The Back Pain Strategy Assessment is designed to change that.
It is a detailed pre-programme assessment created to uncover the real drivers behind your pain, so your rehabilitation can be targeted, accurate and genuinely effective.
Because of course, the most important question is:
“What is actually causing my back to keep getting overloaded?”
Once you finally have that answer, you can begin fixing the problem properly — instead of endlessly managing symptoms.
What happens during the assessment
During the assessment we will explore your situation in detail, including:
• the history of your symptoms
• previous treatment and rehabilitation
• movement patterns and spinal control
• strength and tolerance to load
• factors that may be preventing recovery
This helps identify the stage at which recovery may have stalled.
What the assessment helps determine
The assessment aims to answer several important questions:
• why your back pain has not resolved
• what factors are currently maintaining symptoms
• whether a structured rehabilitation approach may help
• what the most appropriate next step may be
What you will leave with
Following the assessment you will receive:
• a clear explanation of your presentation
• an honest recommendation for next steps
• guidance on whether the Structured Spinal Rehabilitation Pathway may be appropriate.
If rehabilitation is recommended
Once the testing is completed, the physiotherapist will discuss the best plan of action to resolve your issues. If the programme is deemed as suitable for you, we will discuss
the first step to booking onto your course.

Specialist Spinal Assessment, Treatment & Rehabilitation
At The Back Lab, we believe that back pain is not something you have to live with. Whether your pain is recent or long-standing, we uncover the true cause, relieve discomfort fast, and rebuild the stability your spine needs for long-term health.
Led by Hazel Amper, Specialist Spinal Physiotherapist with over 30 years of clinical experience, our approach is thorough, scientific, and bespoke — built around your unique movement patterns, weaknesses, and anatomy.
Why The Back Clinic Is Different
Most back pain care focuses only on the site of pain. We go to the symptom and beyond to find out why it started in the first place.
Our Dual-Diagnosis Approach
Every patient receives two diagnoses — because lasting recovery requires understanding:
1.What is wrong
Structural Diagnosis. What you might see on an MRI or X-ray — for example:
-
Bulging or herniated disc
-
Facet joint irritation
-
Spinal stenosis or degeneration
-
Nerve compression or inflammation
2.Why
Functional Diagnosis. The reason that structures became overloaded — e.g. weak stabilisers, poor movement control, tight or inhibited muscles, postural compensations, or inefficient load transfer through the kinetic chain.
By treating both, we address not just the pain, but the underlying dysfunction that caused it — changing the course of your spinal health for the long term.
How we apply this
Through a head-to-toe assessment, we:
Identify the injured area, assess the stage of healing and apply the correct treatments and provide the best advice to efficiently progress you, through the recovery stages.
We test for mechanical imbalances, postural faults, and muscular weaknesses that cause your spine to overload.
Then, we build a personalised plan to correct faults — so your back not only heals, but stays healthy.

Thorough Treatment Strategy
1. Relieve Pain & Calm the System
We start by easing pain, stiffness, and protective muscle spasm through targeted manual therapy, spinal release techniques, laser, and acupuncture. This allows the nervous system to settle and the body to accept corrective work.
2. Identify & Correct Weak Links
Next, we conduct a whole-body analysis — identifying muscular imbalances, joint restrictions, and postural deviations that overload your spine. We then introduce activation and alignment strategies to restore efficient movement.
3. Rebuild Strength & Support
Through 1:1 Reformer Rehab and functional strength training, we strengthen the key stabilisers that protect your spine — teaching your body how to move, lift, and live without pain. This can be carried out at home, in the studio or within our signature Back Boot Camp intensive course.
4. Rewire Movement & Maintain Health
Finally, we integrate everything into real-life function — posture, walking, bending, exercise, and sport — using movement re-education, functional exercise training and Posture Courses that give you control for life.

If you have severe sudden onset of back or leg pain (sciatica), your back pain keeps returning — or you’ve been told to “just live with it” or told you may need surgery— it’s time for a complete reset.
The course is a 3-week intensive spinal programme designed by Hazel Amper, Specialist Spinal Physiotherapist, to eliminate pain, restore movement, and rebuild lasting spinal strength.
This is not a generic exercise plan or a quick temporary fix. It’s a clinically structured rehabilitation system — combining expert physiotherapy, movement science, and neuromuscular retraining to transform how your body supports your spine.

Your back pain isn’t random
Your back pain isn’t random — it’s a system problem, not just a local one. Pain arises when your stabilising muscles fail, your posture compensates, and your nervous system stays in protection mode.
The way in which you are genetically designed, how you hold your posture, how you move, which muscles you have and don't have - may have existed for many years until your body eventually cannot withstand the pressure. The body does send little messages in the early phases which become louder as time goes by and may only become obvious once reaching a certain age, hormonal influences such as puberty and having a growth spurt, or the menopause, after a seemingly unrelated injury, over or under exercising or at times of significant stress..
To fix it, you need more than just treatment. You need a re-education of your body’s entire operating system. Over three weeks, we’ll retrain your body from the inside out — calming pain, restoring alignment, and building the resilience that keeps your spine strong for life.
The programme delivers:
-
Clarity – Understand why your pain began
-
Correction – Rebuild movement patterns from the ground up and from the inside out
-
Control – Strengthen the muscles that truly support your spine
-
Confidence – Move freely, without fear or guarding
-

The Practical: How It Works
The course is designed to be successful in terms of your goals and also to improve the areas found to be deficient during the initial testing - improving these measures should equal to resolving your pain.
The programme runs over 3 consecutive weeks, combining in-person physiotherapy, hands on work - massage release, targeted reformer rehab, and a short, daily, at home routine.
The programme incldues:
> 1:1 sessions with a rehabilitation specialist
> 10 sessions of carefully planned rehabilitation
> Session 1: 60 mins. Sessions 2-10: 30 mins
>1 x 60 min massage to assist the rehabilitation
>1 x Physio re-test to compare against starting measures
>1 x Group class to decide whether this may be an appropriate form of maintenance
> A detailed home pack
> Your future maintenance will be discussed to find the best way to maintain your new changes.
The Pre- Assessment
(separate cost)
Prior to the programme, all participants are to attend for the pre-assessment - a detailed structural and functional analysis to identify the causes of pain, set goals for the rehabiltiation course and provide you with your pre-programme scores.
The Programme
What’s Included:
✨ Hands-On Release work
Relieve Pain & Calm The System
> Massage to remove stuck muscles
> Physiotherapy (an optional extra, if required) for targeted release work, laser, and acupuncture to reduce inflammation, remove restrictions and pain
We ease pain, stiffness, and protective and likely historical muscle spasm through targeted manual therapy, spinal release techniques, laser, and acupuncture. This allows the nervous system to settle and muscles to release protective / guarding spasm so that the body can accept corrective work.
✨ 1:1 Reformer Rehab + Functional training
Build spinal and adjacent muscular support, control, and confidence through guided and closely supervised exercises (see the 3 Stage Rehab System, below)
Through 1:1 Reformer Rehab and functional strength training, we strengthen the key stabilisers that protect your spine — teaching your body how to move, lift, and live without pain.
✨ Postural & Movement Re-training
Connect your brain to your body for neurological re-wiring, use the power of neuroplasticity to re-train and habitually reform how you sit, stand, walk, and train in ways that protect your spine
✨ K-taping
We initiate postural changes and muscle activation by using kinesiology taping support. A useful start to regaining postural control.
✨ EMS technology
We assist the muscular re-activation process of dormant or sleepy areas using EMS (electromuscular stimulation) technology - electrodes that we place on your vital deep muscles.
✨ Daily Home Programme
Simple, guided exercises (10–20 minutes per day) to reinforce change
✨ Education & Empowerment
Understand your diagnosis, your triggers, and how to maintain results
✨ Group Class
Your advanced strength will be enable you to attend for advanced exercises
✨ Progress Review & Next Steps
End-of-programme check-in and your post programme, grading session.
✨ Maintenance - your ongoing plan
A home maintenance plan is provided with guidance for continued success.
Options include:
- The clinic's group class
- Your bespoke home plan
- Join us on-line for a weekly strength class, regular stretching, posture sessions, relaxation with breathing session and useful tips for ongoing spinal and body health

Why The Programme Is So Successful
A multi-layered complete, integrated approach that creates permanent change — not temporary relief.
Unlike one-off treatments, the programme combines:
-
🔹 Medical precision – root-cause diagnosis
-
🔹 Thorough hands-on therapy – immediate relief
-
🔹 Advanced rehabilitation science – progressive strengthening
-
🔹 Movement retraining – lasting correction
-
🔹 Education – empowering you with knowledge and control
According to your condition and assessment results, we give you the right exercises, at the right time and exercises are taught to you in the right way for your body.
Crucially, as these are 1:1 sessions, we only progress at the speed that your body responds to, allowing for healthy and safe changes whilst aiming for maximum results.

What the programme focuses on
Recovery from persistent back pain usually requires rebuilding several components of spinal function:
• muscular support around the spine
• movement coordination and control
• tolerance to load and activity
• confidence in movement
• endurance for everyday tasks
If these factors are not restored, symptoms may continue to recur.
Programme structure
Duration: 3 weeks
Format: 1:1 rehabilitation
Led by: specialist rehabilitation therapist
Overseen by: senior physiotherapist
Participants attend several rehabilitation sessions per week, allowing progress to occur consistently.
Progressive rehabilitation
Rehabilitation progresses through stages.
Early stages focus on:
• restoring movement confidence
• activating deep spinal muscle support
• reducing protective guarding
Later stages focus on:
• strengthening
• improving stamina
• increasing tolerance to activity
• returning to normal movement and exercise
Expectations
This programme is designed for people who are ready to participate actively in their recovery.
The aim is meaningful improvement in function, not simply temporary symptom relief.
The Back programme has been incredible for me and has made a huge difference in my life, I feel stronger and happier as a result. Both Hazel and Kat from the initial phone call to the sessions have been non-judgemental, warm, encouraging and caring. I shall now be continuing on with group classes as want to build on this fab foundation.

For people with persistent or recurring back pain who want clarity — not guesswork.
Why this assessment exists
The Back Boot Camp Assessment is designed to change that.
