Progressive rehabilitation

Rehabilitation progresses through stages.

Early stages focus on:

• restoring movement confidence
• developing spinal support
• reducing protective guarding

Later stages focus on:

• strengthening
• improving endurance
• increasing tolerance to activity
• returning to normal movement and exercise.

Expectations

This pathway is designed for people who are ready to participate actively in their recovery.

The aim is meaningful improvement in function, not simply temporary symptom relief.

The Back programme has been incredible for me and has made a huge difference in my life, I feel stronger and happier as a result. Both Hazel and Kat from the initial phone call to the sessions have been non-judgemental, warm, encouraging and caring. I shall now be continuing on with group classes as want to build on this fab foundation.

Back Pain for Pilates Instructors

Elevate your rehabilitation knowledge, clinical reasoning and exercise instruction skills to confidently manage clients with back pain, sciatica, disc injuries and common spinal conditions.

A comprehensive certification for Pilates Instructors, Physiotherapists, Sports Therapists and Rehabilitation Professionals.

Led by a spinal specialist physiotherapist with over 30 years of clinical experience, this intensive certification bridges the gap between exercise instruction and rehabilitation, helping you understand not only what exercises to teach, but why you are teaching them.

Whether you work in group classes, reformer sessions or one-to-one rehabilitation, this course will give you the confidence to assess movement, understand dysfunction, modify exercises appropriately and make better rehabilitation decisions when challenges arise.

Because teaching an exercise is one thing.

Understanding the person in front of you is another.

WHY THIS COURSE EXISTS

Every week instructors are faced with clients saying:

"I've got a disc bulge."

"I've got sciatica."

"My physio told me not to do certain exercises."

"My consultant says I have degeneration."

"My back hurts when I do that."

"Something has just gone."

Suddenly the exercise becomes the easy part.

The challenge becomes:

• Is this safe?

• What may be causing their symptoms?

• What should I avoid?

• What should I encourage?

• Which exercises are appropriate?

• Which exercises should be modified?

• How do I progress them safely?

• When should I refer them on?

Most instructors are highly skilled at teaching movement.

Few have been taught how to understand pain, pathology, movement dysfunction and rehabilitation principles when these situations arise.

This course was created to bridge that gap.

THE BACK LAB APPROACH

Most education courses teach exercises.

This course teaches you how to think.

Developed from over 30 years of clinical experience treating spinal pain, movement dysfunction and rehabilitation challenges, this certification combines rehabilitation science, movement analysis, clinical reasoning and practical exercise application.

Rather than memorising exercise lists, you will learn how to understand:

• Why pain may be occurring

• Why movement breaks down

• Why compensation develops

• Why symptoms persist

• Why certain exercises help

• Why certain exercises aggravate symptoms

• How to adapt exercise selection

• How to progress rehabilitation safely

• How to make better decisions when problems arise

Alongside this knowledge, you will build a substantial practical repertoire of rehabilitation exercises suitable for matwork, reformer training, group classes and one-to-one rehabilitation.

WHAT MAKES THIS COURSE DIFFERENT?

Many instructors already know hundreds of exercises.

Yet confidence often disappears when a client presents with pain, injury or a medical diagnosis.

The challenge is rarely a lack of exercises.

The challenge is understanding what those symptoms may mean and knowing how to respond appropriately.

Should you continue?

Should you modify?

Should you regress?

Should you stop?

Should you refer?

This course helps bridge the gap between exercise instruction and clinical understanding, allowing you to make more confident and informed decisions.

You will learn how to analyse movement, identify compensation patterns, understand common pain presentations and apply rehabilitation principles to real-world situations.

UNDERSTANDING BACK PAIN & SPINAL DYSFUNCTION

Develop a deeper understanding of:

• Acute back pain

• Persistent and recurrent back pain

Liberty

It's hard to talk about Hazel & her team’s impact on my life without getting emotional.

I'd suffered from chronic pain and a number of conditions for over a decade, in and out of surgery for a number of issues. I saw two specialists who gave me steroid infiltrations with no effect, and said I'd need surgery.

I found Hazel on a desperate google search and honestly, she changed my life. Hazel created a plan for me which involved bootcamp to strengthen core and glutes, and release work.

After a couple of months of hard work, my pain disappeared. I was able to ski for hours and days thanks to the way my body has been strengthened.

I still struggle to believe how lucky I have been. So many doctors...

I cannot sing their praises enough, Hazel and her team are Healers and they are clearly passionate about the health and well being of their clients.

Grace Donnelly

Highly recommend Hazel and her team….

I had persistent back pain for around 7 years, I had lots of physiotherapy with little success. An acute period of pain led to me visiting Hazel for the first time.

Hazel was very holistic (and kind) in her approach, she truly listened to me and thoroughly considered the best plan. She recognised the need for immediate relief and a long-term strategy.Hazel advised I follow up our physiotherapy with the boot camp programme (intensive exercise course aimed at strengthening my back) which was invaluable.

The programme kept me accountable.

It ensured I followed through on the exercises, did them properly and allowed us to adapt the exercises accordingly. My back pain has reduced, and my back/ core is immeasurably stronger and no longer impacts my daily life.

Thank you - appreciate the support xx

    Your back pain isn’t random

Your back pain isn’t random — it’s a system problem, not just a local one. Pain arises when your stabilising muscles fail, your posture compensates, and your nervous system stays in protection mode.

The way in which you are genetically designed, how you hold your posture, how you move, which muscles you have and don't have - may have existed for many years until your body eventually cannot withstand the pressure. The body does send little messages in the early phases which become louder as time goes by and may only become obvious once reaching a certain age, hormonal influences such as puberty and having a growth spurt, or the menopause, after a seemingly unrelated injury, over or under exercising or at times of significant stress..

To fix it, you need more than just treatment. You need a re-education of your body’s entire operating system. Over three weeks, we’ll retrain your body from the inside out — calming pain, restoring alignment, and building the resilience that keeps your spine strong for life.

    The programme delivers:

    • Clarity – Understand why your pain began

    • Correction – Rebuild movement patterns from the ground up and from the inside out

    • Control – Strengthen the muscles that truly support your spine

    • Confidence – Move freely, without fear or guarding

  • Screenshot 2025-12-10 at 03.07.09.png

    The Practical: How It Works

The course is designed to be successful in terms of your goals

and also to improve the areas found to be deficient during the initial testing - improving these measures should equal to resolving your pain.

The programme runs over 3 consecutive weeks, combining in-person physiotherapy, hands on work - massage release, targeted reformer rehab, and a short, daily, at home routine.

    The programme incldues:

    > 1:1 sessions with a rehabilitation specialist

    > 10 sessions of carefully planned rehabilitation

    > Session 1: 60 mins. Sessions 2-10: 30 mins

    >1 x 60 min massage to assist the rehabilitation

    >1 x Physio re-test to compare against starting measures

    >1 x Group class to decide whether this may be an appropriate form of maintenance

    > A detailed home pack

    > Your future maintenance will be discussed to find the best way to maintain your new changes.

    The Back Strategy Assessment

    (separate cost)

Prior to the programme, all participants are to attend for the pre-assessment - a detailed structural and functional analysis to identify the causes of pain, set goals for the rehabiltiation course and provide you with your pre-programme scores.

    The Programme

    What’s Included:

    Hands-On Release work

Relieve Pain & Calm The System

    > Massage to remove stuck muscles

Why this pathway exists

Many people with persistent back pain struggle to recover because:

1. Assessment

There may have been a lack of thorough assessment and testing. Issues may be presented on an x ray but not offer in-depth explanation. Your whole body may not be considered. Your function - the way you move, breathe, exercise and work may not have been analyzed. The influence of your nervous system may not have been discussed. It's important to connect all of the dots to be then be able to give you answers and importantly, provide the information necessary to design an effective rehabilitation plan.

2. Rehabilitation

Due to the absence of adequate testing, the rehabilitation plan may not incorporate all the required elements to fix you.

Rehabilitation also can be too fragmented. Basic exercises may be provided, not followed through with your practitioner or exercises may be too high a level and aggravate symptoms. Posture may be discussed, stretches may be shown, breathing work practiced but not delivered to you in a fluid manner from start to finish.

Plus, occasional treatment sessions may relieve symptoms temporarily but often do not rebuild the strength and resilience required for lasting recovery.

The Structured Spinal Rehabilitation Pathway includes;

  • an in-depth consultation

  • thorough examination and testing

Based on findings;

  • A personalized and seamless, start to finish treatment and rehabilitation programme with our team of Lead Physiotherapist, Rehabilitation Specialist and Clinical Massage to get you exactly where you need to be.

  • Sports injury, woman and spinal cord for fitness, workout and wellness in studio with red

What the pathway focuses on

Recovery from persistent back pain usually requires rebuilding several components of spinal function:

• muscular support around the spine
• movement coordination and control
• tolerance to load and activity
• confidence in movement
• endurance for everyday tasks

If these factors are not restored, symptoms may continue to recur.

Advance Your Practice. Elevate Your Clinical Understanding.

Whether you teach group Pilates classes, work one-to-one with clients, or support people through injury recovery, there comes a point where just exercise knowledge alone is no longer enough.

Clients arrive with back pain, shoulder pain, sciatica, hypermobility, arthritis, joint replacements, persistent aches, movement restrictions and questions that can be difficult to answer with confidence. They want to know why something hurts, whether it is safe to continue, what exercises they should be doing, and why previous approaches may not have worked.

The Back Lab Professional Education Courses have been designed to bridge the gap between exercise instruction and clinical understanding.

Professional Education at The Back Lab
At The Back Lab, education is a natural extension of what we do every day.

We are not an education company that occasionally treats patients. We are a specialist physiotherapy and rehabilitation clinic that works with people in pain every day.

Our courses have evolved directly from decades of clinical experience assessing, treating and rehabilitating real people with real problems.

For over 30 years, I have worked with individuals presenting with everything from simple movement dysfunction and recurring aches to complex spinal conditions, sciatica, persistent pain, hypermobility, post-surgical rehabilitation and long-standing movement limitations.

Throughout that time, one thing has become increasingly clear: there is often a gap between understanding exercise and understanding the person performing it.

Many excellent instructors, therapists and movement professionals are taught what exercises to do, but not always why certain people struggle with them, compensate during them, experience pain during them, or fail to improve despite doing them consistently.

It is within that gap that confidence can disappear.

Questions arise daily in clinics, studios and classes:
"Why does this hurt?"
"Is this normal?"
"Should I continue?"
"What should I change?"
"Why is this person not progressing?"
"Am I choosing the right exercise?"

On health questionnaires you may be bombarded with musculoskeletal limitation that you're unsure what to do with apart from just avoiding certain exercises / positions.

These are rarely exercise questions. More often, they are assessment, reasoning and problem-solving questions.

The philosophy behind The Back Lab's education programmes is simple: the better you understand the body, the more effectively you can use exercise.

Our aim is not to turn Pilates instructors into physiotherapists, nor therapists into consultants.

Instead, our goal is to
- Make you feel confident within your scope of of practice
-Allow you to answer the questions that arise all day, every day
- prevent you from just avoiding altogether and allow you to have the toolbox to effectively work around and with issues.
-Allow you to be more effective and achieve the best outcome with your clients
-To ensure clients have optimal confidence in your approach

Overall we aim to:
Provide a deeper understanding of how the body functions, how dysfunction develops, why pain occurs, and how movement can be used more effectively to support recovery, performance and long-term health.

Everything we teach is grounded in clinical practice.

The assessment principles, rehabilitation strategies, movement concepts and problem-solving frameworks taught within our courses have been developed through years of working with thousands of patients. They are based on observing patterns, identifying common mistakes, recognising recurring dysfunctions and understanding what genuinely helps people improve.

We believe that successful movement instruction and successful rehabilitationshare many of the same foundations. Both require observation. Both require critical thinking. Both require an understanding of load, capacity, compensation and progression. Most importantly, both require the ability to see the individual rather than simply the condition.

Our courses are designed to bridge the gap between clinical knowledge and practical application.

Whether you are teaching a group class, working one-to-one with clients, supporting rehabilitation, or simply looking to deepen your understanding of the body, our aim is to help you think differently, observe more effectively and make more confident decisions.

We teach in small groups, encourage discussion and questions, and focus heavily on real-world application rather than theory alone. We want delegates to leave not only with new knowledge, but with greater clarity, confidence and a practical framework they can immediately apply within their own practice.

We give you the exercises,
we give you the knowledge behind the exercises,
we give you the knowledge behind the body and by putting this altogether you are creating -confidence in yourself
-client confidence in you
-effective sessions
-and safe working practice.

At its heart, The Back Lab's education pathway is about helping movement professionals better understand the people they work with every day.
Because when you understand the problem more clearly, choosing the right solution becomes far easier.
