Back Lab

This may be nature - how you are designed that pre disposes you to injury ie hyper mobility, low tone muscles, joints ie hip or shoulder, that are configured sub-optimally, excessive spinal curvatures. And there is nurture - which is to do with lifestyle choices including sitting at a desk, stress, certain sports.

Genetics & lifestyle

Every muscle in your body has a job.

It can be to create a movement (superficial under the skin, & you can see it, ie the bicep in the arm brings a cup to your mouth) or

Hold your skeleton in place (deep, can’t see it, ie lower abs that wrap around your torso & hold your posture up) & not allow your bones to come into contact with each other, thus preserving the space between bones (the joint).

So first the injury or the faulty behaviour is in the muscle - tightness, then it can become inflamed (“itis” ie tendinitis, bursitis..) at this stage they can’t function anymore. Space reduces in the joints, bones rub & degenerate- first at cartilage level ( ie spinal disc / knee meniscus, hip labrum) & then bone level, holes start to form.

When pain starts to overtake your function at the joint, the injury may which may then require injections & various surgeries including joint replacement.

The long terms consequences are inevitable degradation

However ! At any phase of the injury process you can alter your trajectory. You can feel so much better, with more function & less pain. You can re-configure your body to perform healthily from the right places with the right strength. We stop you unknowingly degrading your body. Even after joint procedures, this is a perfect management plan to prevent further damage.

Over time & long term consequences

5

If you’ve found that you have an issue or multiple issues that won’t go away, you may have tried multiple treatments & methods but can’t quite move on. This could include low back pain, neck stiffness, aching shoulders, painful hips, knees that don’t feel like they work, aching feet..

We have the perfect course for you.

We are heavily interested in ‘dysfunction’ whereby the body doesn’t work quite as it should. The wrong muscles are constantly activated & important muscles lie dormant

Injury

1

When patients come to the clinic with an injury we also investigate whether there is a chronic background to their pain. This means there are structures in the body & behaviours that make the body operate in a way that causes parts to become ‘overloaded’. Where you feel the pain - is the overload site. ie lower back pain. Physiotherapy treatment can be provided for this ‘local’ issue ie reduce inflammation, heal this area. However, to facilitate a complete recovery it may be necessary to address the underlying dysfunction

DYSFUNCTION

Body overload

2

A combination of these factors can lead you to being in a painful or injured situation. The physical consequences are

Weak/sleepy ‘‘good muscles”

Tight ‘‘wrongly used muscles”

Poor posture & alignment

combined with not knowing how to pull yourself back / how to operate your body

Consequences

4

Using Physiotherapy knowledge & exercise science, the sessions & alignment work will fast track you out of the cycle of dysfunction which can usually take months or years to change via other methods.

After undergoing thorough testing, your assessment findings are directly fed into the boot camp.

1) Stop tightness & muscle spasm

De-activate the compensation: quietening down of compensation strategies (this is where you have pain) of the lower back, hips, neck…via stretching, massage, re-training the correct areas & teaching you how to operate from other muscles (see below)

2) Strengthen you up

Activate dormant muscles: wake up & strengthen correct muscles with progressive exercises - doing the right exercises at the right time in the right way & progressing difficulty levels to reach your strongest level. These are the deep muscles of your core, gluts, neck & shoulder blades

3) Straighten you up

Teach you correct alignment (your posture when still & when moving) which will keep your muscles behaving well (to keep the wrong muscles = deactivated & good muscles = activated)

4) Exist & move well - how to operate your body

Your changes are vitally combined with learning how to operate your body. By consciously moving correctly by knowing where to move from and when ie keeping the order of

-tummy, bum, then leg without being ‘all leg’,

-tummy, shoulder blade & then arm - without being all arm.

“Stability before mobility”

The Positive Loop

And all 4 principles create a positive loop: strong + aligned + well operated = continuous strength by being well aligned + operating well = continuous good alignment etc & you leave the negative loop of dysfunction + pain + injury.
